About Course

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the design of clinical studies, equipping learners with the methodological foundations needed to critically evaluate and conduct high-quality research in liver disease. Through expert-led video lectures and practical examples, you will explore the strengths, limitations, and appropriate applications of the main study designs used in clinical hepatology research.

The course covers prospective and retrospective observational studies, randomized controlled trials, systematic reviews and meta-analyses, as well as emerging and innovative study designs increasingly used in modern clinical research. Special attention is given to biomarker and diagnostic studies, including principles of validation, clinical utility, and interpretation. Emphasis is placed on study selection, methodological rigor, bias reduction, and the translation of research findings into clinical practice.

In this course, you will:

  • Understand the principles and applications of prospective observational studies in hepatology research.
  • Learn how retrospective studies are designed, conducted, and interpreted, including their strengths and limitations.
  • Explore the methodology and clinical relevance of systematic reviews and meta-analyses.
  • Review the structure, conduct, and interpretation of randomized controlled trials.
  • Become familiar with novel and adaptive study designs used in contemporary clinical research.
  • Understand the key principles of biomarker and diagnostic studies, including validation and assessment of clinical performance.
  • Learn how to identify bias, confounding factors, and methodological limitations across different study designs.
  • Strengthen your ability to critically appraise clinical research literature and apply evidence-based findings to hepatology practice.
  • Develop a practical framework for selecting appropriate study designs to address relevant clinical research questions in liver disease.
