Treatment of acute decompensation of cirrhosis and acute-on-chronic liver failure

Upon completing Module 6, students will be able to:

  • Diagnose acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF).
  • Identify and manage precipitating factors of ACLF.
  • Apply criteria for intensive care unit (ICU) admission.
  • Understand hepatic and extra-hepatic organ support strategies (including plasma exchange) and emerging therapies in ACLF.
  • Appropriately use conventional therapies in ACLF, including beta-blockers, antibiotic prophylaxis, anticoagulation, nutritional support, and surgical interventions.
  • Apply criteria and approaches for palliative care in ACLF patients not eligible for transplantation.
