Welcome to Module 3
In this module, you will explore the principles, workflows, and applications of metabolomics and lipidomics in biomedical and translational research.
Through a series of video lectures, Christophe Junot, Director of the Medicines and Healthcare Technologies Department of the Frédéric Joliot Institute for Life Sciences in France, will introduce you to the metabolomics workflow, from the fundamental principles of this technology to its applications and future developments. Cristina Lopez-Vicario, researcher at Institut d’Investigacions Biomèdiques August Pi i Sunyer (IDIBAPS) in Spain, will focus on lipidomics technologies, guiding you through its specific workflow, including sample preparation, data acquisition and instrumentation, data analysis, validation, and the differences between targeted and untargeted approaches.
Using real-world examples, this module will help you understand how metabolomic and lipidomic approaches can be applied to investigate biological processes and address relevant research questions.
Upon completing Module 3, students will be able to:
- Understand the fundamental principles and applications of metabolomics and lipidomics in biomedical research.
- Describe the main steps involved in metabolomic and lipidomic workflows, from sample preparation to data analysis and interpretation.
- Differentiate between targeted and untargeted approaches and identify their appropriate applications.
- Recognize key methodological considerations in metabolomics and lipidomics, including data acquisition, instrumentation, and validation.
- Interpret how metabolomic and lipidomic approaches can be applied to address biological and clinical research questions.
- Identify current applications and emerging trends in metabolomics and lipidomics.
