I was born in the Netherlands and did my medical studies at the University of Antwerp, Belgium. After my medical studies, I did a PhD on the role of hepatocellular autophagy in NAFLD and did postdoctoral research in the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Boston, USA. After finishing my residencies, I became a medical specialist in 2020.
Currently, I am working as a hepatologist-pancreatologist in the Antwerp University Hospital (UZA). This tertiary centre is recognised as a hepatology reference centre and participates in many international academic collaborations and is a leading centre in the field of MASLD. I am also affiliated to the University of Antwerp as assisting professor.
My research is centred around MASLD encompassing both clinical and translational/basic research. My specific interests are the role of the intrahepatic (micro)vasculature in the pathophysiology of MASLD, and the effects of the disease on the portal and systemic vasculature.
