Treatment of acute decompensation of cirrhosis and acute-on-chronic liver failure

Upon completing Module 2, students will be able to:

  • Develop a comprehensive knowledge of the management of ascites in patients with cirrhosis, including diagnosis, treatment targets and strategies to achieve those targets.
  • Identify recurrent and refractory ascites and understand treatment options including transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS), indications to liver transplantation and palliative treatments.
  • Acquire foundational knowledge in the management of acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients with cirrhosis, including diagnostic criteria, early management and differential diagnosis.
  • Develop clinical skills in the medical management of hepatorenal syndrome-acute kidney injury (HRS–AKI), including treatment with vasoconstrictors and albumin, monitoring during treatment, indications for renal replacement therapy (RRT) and evaluation for liver transplantation vs simultaneous liver kidney transplantation.
