Pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatments of chronic liver disease

Upon completing Module 6, students will be able to:

  • Describe the molecular virology and replication cycle of the hepatitis C virus (HCV) and explain their relevance to antiviral drug design.
  • Analyze the global epidemiology of HCV, including transmission routes and key risk factors, with particular attention to vulnerable populations.
  • Explain the pathogenesis and clinical progression of HCV infection, including mechanisms of viral persistence, chronicity, and liver injury.
  • Apply current diagnostic and monitoring approaches for HCV, including serological and molecular assays as well as non-invasive liver assessment tools.
  • Evaluate the impact of direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) on HCV treatment outcomes and disease burden.
  • Understand the major challenges and evidence-based strategies for achieving global HCV elimination in line with WHO 2030 targets.
