Upon completing Module 5, students will be able to:
- Explain the molecular biology and replication cycle of HBV, including the role of cccDNA and the persistence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg).
- Describe the epidemiology and global disease burden of HBV, with particular attention to maternal transmission.
- Explain the immunological basis and effectiveness of the HBV vaccine, and describe global vaccination strategies, including birth-dose and catch-up immunization.
- Identify and interpret the phases of chronic HBV infection and the main HBV biomarkers.
- Summarize current HBV treatment strategies, including nucleos(t)ide analogues and pegylated interferon.
- Analyze public health strategies and barriers to HBV elimination, highlighting the roles of universal vaccination, maternal screening, and antiviral prophylaxis.
